I can’t recommend Gentlemind enough for anyone with mental health problems. I was helped to overcome severe bereavement issues.
“Learned so much”
I cannot recommend James at Gentlemind enough. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and his advice and support is so genuine and ongoing. I have learned so much from him and I am so glad that I attended his course (and am continuing to attend further courses with James)
I had a positive experience and now have a greater understanding of mindfulness and how I can use it in my everyday life.
“Kind and caring nature”
I did the Mindfulness course early in 2019! I wasn’t sure what to expect but was hoping to find some calmness and a reduction in stress. The group of just 4 people made you feel “safe” and James has the most kind and caring nature, and a voice to relax anybody! I cannot thank James enough for the insight into what mindfulness can do for us all, on so many levels, and how we can use it in our everyday lives.
“Brilliant and attentive teacher”
James is a brilliant and attentive teacher. He is dedicated to his learning, and his kindness and support in bringing what he learns to his students is boundless. I cannot thank him enough. His eight week course was joyous and informative, a mix of science, practice, and poetry. James provides a wealth of information in a variety of ways, is always very present and interested, and I definitely recommend his course-it is as much as you need – or way beyond – simply Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

Six Week, Live, Online, Face to Face Mindful Meditation Courses
As it is not possible to run courses at my usual venue of The River Rooms in Bideford , I am offering a six week course, based on the MBSR programme, that will run over six, one and a half hourly sessions. Depending on demand there may be two sessions a week, one in the morning and one in the evening to accommodate NHS and Care worker shift patterns.
Individual sessions can also be accommodated to meet your specific requirements and at times that suit your particular lifestyle. Contact me and we can work something out.
In these difficult times many people are finding the day to day uncertainties around coping with the Covid 19 emergency overwhelming. Many are fearful for their health and the well-being of loved ones, from whom they may have been separated for months. There may be anxiety around financial and work issues and the added pressures of having to be a teacher in a ‘home school’ environment. Isolation and loneliness can also be added factors. Through all this many are feeling the strain and are seeking a way to re-enter themselves within this increasingly frantic world.
Mindful Meditation is an evidence-based method of relieving stress and anxiety. It is a way of regaining equilibrium by learning simple proven techniques that have been shown to re-balance our body chemistry and lesson the physical and emotional effects of an overly busy and distracted mind.
How much will it cost?
To reflect these difficult times I am offering the course for only £95.00. However, if you are an NHS, front-line or Care worker, I am offering a 15% discount (£80.75).
What will I get?
The course comprises of six, one and a half hour, live, on-line, face to face sessions via Zoom, in a small group of no more than six other participants. These will often be individual sessions You will receive a comprehensive course handbook and the Core meditations in mp3 format. These guided meditations will be sent direct to your Mobile, Tablet or PC or alternatively supplied on a small flash drive. CD’s are also an option.
What do I need?
You will require an internet connection, ideally via Wi-Fi, broadband wired or wireless. Basically, if you can browse smoothly, do Internet banking and that sort of thing you should be OK.
You will need to use the Microphone and Web Cam built into your computer or a USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth Web Cam and microphone. Smartphones and Tablets usually have everything you need built in.
Even if your laptop or desktop or other device has speakers, it is best to use earphones so that the sound from the speakers does not cause an echo in the Zoom meeting.
This is the important bit. Mindful Meditation is not a quick fix. To get the full benefit of the course you should demonstrate as high a degree of commitment as you can. As you progress through the sessions you will be asked to put aside at least 30 minutes each day for formal meditation practice.
Like all acquired skills, Meditation takes practice; the more you practice, the more proficient you become and the greater the benefit you will feel. It is possible you may need to re-organise your day or seek support from your partner to fulfill this requirement, especially where young children are involved. There are also some ‘informal’ tasks you will be asked to complete, that are not arduous and are designed to slip seamlessly into your day. If you live with other people, children or a partner, you will need a space that you can sit quietly and undisturbed in, for at least a half hour each day.
If you are interested in joining an on-line Meditation Group, please complete the secure Online Application Form or get in touch via the ‘Contact’ page and I will get back to you as soon as possible. During our conversation I will ask you about yourself and your medical history, medications etc., with emphasis on your mental health. Mindfulness may not be suitable for you if you are currently experiencing or are being prescribed medication for depression. You will also be asked to complete an application form. Any information you divulge is held in the strictest confidence, not shared with any third party, and destroyed at the end of the course.
Payment for the course, unless otherwise arranged, must be received in full one week prior to the starting date. Your place will be secured with a 50% deposit, payable on return of the application form. If nesessary, staged payments can be arranged
Starting dates and times
The courses will run on a one to one basis or with up to six participants. Exact dates and times will be determined in consultation between applicants to determine the best outcome for everyone, although some compromise may be required.
Courses are scheduled to commence throughout January and continue into Spring 2021.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Mindful Meditation ( MBSR) ‘Gold standard’ evidenced based courses in 2021
Sessions for 2021 are scheduled for Tuesday afternoons, 1200-1330hrs and Wednesday evenings 1900-2030hrs. The full MBSR course is scheduled to begin late January.
Commencing Tuesday 12th January, 1200 -1330 hrs , and I am offering a new rolling weekly programme, based around the full MBSR curriculum.
The above programme is also being offered on Wednesday evenings, commencing 13th of January 1900 - 2030hrs.
In order to adhere to social distancing guidelines, there are only four places available at each session, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
I am delighted to announce that Covid 19 restrictions permitting, the next full course is scheduled to run weekly at The River Rooms in Bideford for eight consecutive weeks commencing Sunday 31st of January until Sunday 21st of March from 10.00 - 1200
What is the difference between the courses?
If you feel able to commit to an eight week course, the two-hour weekly sessions lead you step by step through the MBSR curriculum with extra emphasis around the evidenced based Neuroscience associated with Mindful Meditation. This course is more structured than the drop-in sessions and involves a greater personal commitment to home practice and the sequential building of a sustainable Meditation practice. A full course handbook to supplement your sessions is provided along with a suite of guided meditations supplied via digital media.
The weekly 'drop-in' one and a half hour sessions are aimed at those, who for whatever reason, cannot commit to a full eight week course, but are nevertheless interested and committed in developing a Meditation practice. The sessions will demonstrate and teach the core practices over a rolling six week period with some evidential examples of the Neuroscience behind the techniques explained. A full course handbook is not supplied although handouts to supplement the sessions may at times be made available. To facilitate home practice, access to the three core guided meditations will also be made available through the sessions.
Under certain circumstance's the above courses may run concurrently.
The MBSR ‘Gold standard’ evidenced based courses run for eight weeks and comprise of one two-hour session each week.
The new, weekly Wednesday evening rolling programme of sessions is based around the core elements of the full MBSR programme, but allows you to be more flexible in how you attend the sessions.
Currently, due to Covid 19 safety guidelines, I limit my courses to a maximum of four participants and therefore prefer to introduce people to the course individually. This gives you an opportunity to speak to me privately, tell me a little about what is going on for you and ask any questions that you may have. This very informal process which takes place via a phone call after you have returned your application form.
Honest and open communication with a mindfulness teacher at this stage also helps to manage expectations, thereby ensuring that the experience of the course will be as valuable and nurturing as possible.
There are no prerequisites for attending a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course. The course is ideal for those wishing to learn to meditate, or for those who are seeking to reduce the effects of stress, lessen tension or simply seeking a calmer approach to their daily lives, as well as for people who would like to revive their meditation practice.
There are some indications that the course is not ideal for people suffering from a current episode of depression.
Currently the group size never exceeds 4 people, maintaining a small, trusting and intimate environment. However, even this small group format can at times be difficult for some people with social anxiety.
If you are suffering from one of these or any other mental health condition, you will be asked to declare it on the course application form, so together, via a telephone conversation, we can determine if this is the best time for you to enrol in a course.
The medical information you disclose is held securely and confidentially by Gentlemind in line with GDPR guidelines, and is not shared with any other party or retained beyond the conclusion of the course.
What will it cost?
The full MBSR eight week course fee is £150.00 and a deposit of £50.00 is required to secure a place.
The Wednesday evening and Tuesday daytime sessions, must be pre-booked at least one week in advance and costs £12.00 per one and a half hour session session.
Once you are accepted onto the full eight week course your deposit is only refundable if the course is cancelled or if you wish to withdraw and your place can be filled.
Once your deposit is paid, I will contact you by phone to ensure this is the appropriate course for you and to answer any questions you may have.
The balance must be made no later than two weeks before the start of the course.
If for medical reasons we decide the course is not appropriate for you then your deposit will be immediately refunded.
Depending on your circumstances, you might be eligible for a concession. If you are in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance, Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance or with only a State Pension as your only source of income, or are suffering financial hardship please don't hesitate to contact me.
As a participant on the full, eight week MBSR course you will receive a comprehensive course handbook and the a suite of guided meditations in a choice of digital formats. Ongoing support during and beyond the eight weeks is available if required.
If for any reason the minimum number of four participants is not met by one week prior to the commencement date, the course may be cancelled or postponed. All monies paid as a deposit or payments in full will be returned immediately.
Please be aware that to get the most out of an MBSR course requires commitment on your part and each participant, irrespective of the course you are attending, is encouraged to undertake at least a half hour of home practice a day over at least five days between classes. It requires a strong commitment to persevere through this gentle daily discipline of meditation and associated tasks, but it is a fact that the rewards can be life changing.
